Viking Lotto is a unique Lotto game
cooperation between the national lotteries in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland and Estonia. Viking Lotto started in 1993 and was the first of its kind in Europe.
Draws are held every Wednesday evening and takes place at Norsk Tipping in Hamar. Cost per combination is NOK 4 in Norway and similar cost in the other member countries. The first prize is common and is financed by a certain Euro amount for each combination played. The lower prizes are national and locally decided. This arrangement is different from Euromillions where all prize categories are common.
The issue is to select 6 numbers which can be any integer from 1 to 48, called a combination. During the draw, 6 main and 2 additional numbers are drawn from the source of 48 numbers. The first prize is won with 6 correct numbers and the remaining prizes are decided on.
Norsk Tipping
Norsk Tipping AS is the national lottery in Norway, located in Hamar. The company is owned by the Norwegian state and administrated by the Ministry of Culture. Norsk Tipping was founded in 1948 and offered only football pools (Tipping) until 1986, when Lotto was introduced. Today Norsk Tipping offers draw games (Lotto, Viking Lotto, Joker and Extra), sports games (Tipping and Oddsen) and the scratch-game family Flax. In June 2003 the Norwegian parliament (Stortinget) decided that Norsk Tipping should take over the gaming-machine market in Norway, but this has still not occurred because of a legal case initiated by the current private operators.
The proceeds from the activities are equally distributed between sports and culture in Norway. In fact, 25% of the government's culture budget comes from these proceeds. The game Extra is an exception, where the proceeds are given to good social projects through a dedicated
organization.
Hamar
Hamar was separated from Vang as a city and municipality of its own in 1849. Vang was merged with Hamar January 1, 1992.
The city is located on the shores of lake Mjøsa, Norway's largest lake, and is the principal city of the Hedmark county. It is bordered to the northwest by Ringsaker, to the north by
Amot, to the east by Loten and on the south by Stange.
