Lotterywest, formerly the Lotteries Commission of Western Australia.Lotterywest, formerly the Lotteries Commission of Western Australia, is an Australian lotteries corporation run by the State Government of Western Australia. Lotterywest sells lottery tickets and "instant win" scratchcards through a network of newsagents and other authorized retailers. It syndicates national lottery games including Saturday Lotto, Oz Lotto, Powerball, Monday Lotto, and Wednesday lotto; it also administers the locally run Cash 3 game.

All the revenue spent on Lotterywest's games is ultimately returned to the Western Australian community, with the majority as prize money, as well as in grants to community groups. A set percentage is put aside for funding public hospitals, sporting groups and arts organizations. Lotterywest directly sponsors the Perth International Arts Festival, Lotterywest Skyworks Australia Day celebrations, local film funding body Screenwest and the Scitech organization.

The Lotteries Commission of Western Australia was first established in 1933.

West Australia

Western Australia is Australia's largest state in area, covering the western third of the mainland, and is bordered by South Australia and the Northern Territory. It is, after the Sakha Republic in Russia, the second largest subnational entity (statoid) in the world. The capital city, Perth, is the most isolated city of over one million people in the world, being 2,104 km (1307 miles) from Adelaide. Perth is closer to Jakarta, Indonesia (3,007 km/1,868 miles) than it is to Sydney (3,284 km/2,041 miles).

The people of Western Australia, West Australians or Western Australians, are often colloquially referred to as sandgropers because of the insect found on sand dunes around Perth.

Government of Western Australia

The formation of the Government of Western Australia is prescribed in its Constitution, which dates from 1890, although it has been amended many times since then. Since 1901 Western Australia has been a state of the Commonwealth of Australia, and the Australian Constitution regulates its relationship with the Commonwealth.

Under the Australian Constitution, Western Australia ceded certain legislative and judicial powers to the Commonwealth, but retained complete independence in all other areas.

Western Australia is governed according to the principles of the Westminster system, a form of parliamentary government based on the model of the United Kingdom. Legislative power rests with the Parliament of Western Australia, which consists of the Crown, represented by the Governor of Western Australia, and the two Houses, the Western Australian Legislative Council and the Western Australian Legislative Assembly.

Executive power rests formally with the Executive Council, which consists of the Governor and senior ministers. In practice executive power is exercised by the Premier of Western Australia and the Cabinet, who are appointed by the Governor, but who hold office by virtue of their ability to command the support of a majority of members of the Legislative Assembly.

Judicial power is exercised by the Supreme Court of Western Australia and a system of subordinate courts, but the High Court of Australia has final jurisdiction. Other federal courts also have jurisdiction over certain matters, but only insofar as the Australian Constitution grants the federal government power to make laws for such matters.
